Yeon Woo was born in Gangneung, Gangwon-do, South Korea on July 5, 1984. After graduating high school, he studied civil and environmental engineering at Sejong University in South Korea.
He began modeling while still in college under the alias “Seo Ji-hoo” since he was more interested in fashion and show business. When he started acting in films and television series, he eventually adopted Yeon Woo-jin as his stage name.

At the age of 23, while still a student, he debuted as a model at Seoul Fashion Week.
Yeon agreed to contract the next year and began modeling for the “Evisu” brand of jeans. He was able to break into the South Korean film industry because of the commercial campaign’s outstanding popularity.
