In January 2016, Kang took part in the reality TV show “Produce 101,” joining fellow trainees like Kim Na-young and Kim Se-jeong. Their goal was to secure a spot in a debut girl group. Kang officially became a member of the female group after securing the ninth position with a total of 173,762 votes.
Mina made her debut with the nine-member ensemble Gugudan in June 2016. She made her acting debut with Gugudan while still an I.O.I. member. She was not a part of I.O.I.’s Whatta Man comeback because of her promotions with Gugudan. In July 2017, Kang and fellow member Hye-yeon started the Gugudan 5959 subgroup. They made their public debut on August 10 with the song “Ice Chu.”

In 2017, Kang initiated her acting journey with a role in the MBC romantic comedy series “Children of the 20th Century,” portraying the character complement to Han Ye-young’s Seul. That year marked her debut as the lead actress in the two-episode tvN drama “History of Walking Upright.” Following this, she appeared alongside Sehun from Exo in the action-packed online film Dokgo Rewind. She played a subordinate character in romantic fantasy drama “Tale of Fairy” on the television network tvN. Kang’s involvement in the Thai Law of the Jungle production received official confirmation in March 2019. During that year, Kang took on the role of Kim Yuna in the fantasy drama series “Hotel del Luna” on tvN.
Subsequently, Kang secured a role in the web drama “Summer Boys,” which made its debut on March 30, 2021. In the subsequent year, she portrayed Han Ae-jin, the only offspring of an aristocratic lineage, in the leading role of the historical drama Moonshine broadcasted on KBS2.
