Typically, cabin crew are seated at the very front or rear of the plane. On a Boeing 737-800, the flight attendants are seated in fold-down seats near the rear doors, which were used to extract the two survivors.

A 33-year-old male flight attendant, identified as Lee Mo, was rescued at 9:23am and later said he had been wearing his seatbelt during the crash but had no memory of the incident after that. When he woke up at Ewha Women’s University Hospital in Seoul, he reportedly asked, “What happened?” and “Why am I here?”

The second survivor, a 25-year-old female flight attendant, known by her last name, Koo, is currently recovering at Asan Medical Center in eastern Seoul. She recalled the explosion after smoke emerged from one of the plane’s engines, saying, “Smoke came out of one of the plane’s engines and then it exploded.”

Worst South Korean Airline Disaster in Decades

Sunday’s crash marked the worst disaster for a South Korean airline in decades, with 179 fatalities. Investigations into the causes of the crash are ongoing, with authorities having identified 141 of the victims so far. The bodies have been moved to a temporary morgue.

According to South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, the bodies of all 179 victims have been moved to the morgue, while families of the victims await information.

“We think everybody would have been alive… the pilots might have suffered some damage, but I even suspect they might have survived,” Learmount added.

A bird strike on the aircraft is believed to have caused power loss to at least one engine, and possibly led to the hydraulic failure. After a failed initial landing attempt, the pilots touched down at high speed on their second attempt, without deploying flaps or speed brakes to slow the plane down. Only one engine’s thrust reverser was used to slow the aircraft.

Captain Denys Davydov, a pilot of the same Boeing 737-800, told The Times that the presence of hydraulics on the plane to deploy the reverser but not the flaps or landing gear was highly unusual.

Airline safety expert Geoffrey Dell also doubted that a bird strike alone would have disabled the landing gear, stressing that such strikes typically don’t lead to the loss of the airplane. Furthermore, questions have been raised as to why firefighters weren’t on the scene when the plane was landing.

The SS United States, one of the world’s most iconic cruise ships, is set to be sunk intentionally by authorities for a unique purpose.

Built in the early 1950s, this retired ocean liner was once the fastest of its time. It also hosted famous figures such as John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Walt Disney, Judy Garland, and Salvador Dalí. At over 1,000 feet long, it was even larger than the Titanic. However, in 1969, the ship was retired, much to the surprise of many, especially since cruises were already booked for 1970 and beyond.

The decision to retire the ship was due to poor maintenance, and most of its interior furnishings were sold off. Now, more than 55 years later, the SS United States is set to be sunk intentionally by officials in the USA.

Plans to Sink the Ship

Though the decision hasn’t been officially authorized yet, plans are already in motion to sink the ship. Currently docked in Philadelphia, the SS United States is expected to be moved to Florida’s Destin-Fort Walton Beach. Once there, it will be sunk to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.

To make this happen, the ship will first need extensive repairs. Its current condition makes it unfit to be moved as it is. The vessel is not watertight, has structural issues, and an off-center gravity, meaning it cannot be towed yet. The process of getting the ship ready for its final voyage could take years.

A New Purpose for the SS United States

When it is eventually sunk, the SS United States will serve a new, important purpose. The plan is for it to become an artificial reef, providing a habitat for marine life. Okaloosa County’s tourism director, Jennifer Adams, expressed her excitement about the project: “This will be an exciting addition to our artificial reefs and wrecks and will provide essential habitat for fish.”

At the time, Brooklinn was spending the day with her cousin and her cousin’s eight-year-old pit bull, Diesel. The day had been uneventful, but it took a terrifying turn when Diesel suddenly lunged at Brooklinn, biting her face and tearing off her entire top lip.

Reflecting on the terrifying moment, Brooklinn told Inside Edition: “He was hanging off of my mouth.”

After the attack, she took a photo of herself, though she admitted it was hard for her to even look at it. “You could see the fear in my eyes, ‘Oh my God, that’s what I look like,’” she recalled. “How do you fix this? How do you fix this? I didn’t realize he had taken off my whole lip.”

Brooklinn’s Journey of Healing

In the four years since the attack, Brooklinn has made incredible progress, openly sharing her journey on Instagram. Despite the challenges, she has remained honest about the difficulties she faced in her recovery.

She shared: “Just having to look at myself in the mirror and having to tell myself and believe that what I am seeing is not the final product and loving myself regardless of how I look, just from the inside out.”

After undergoing six surgeries, some lasting up to 20 hours, Brooklinn has regained her smile. However, it wasn’t an easy road. It took her more than a year to find a doctor who was willing to take on her complex case.

Praising Her Surgeon as an ‘Artist’

Brooklinn has expressed deep gratitude for her doctor, whom she described as an “artist” following her final major procedure in 2023. She also revealed her plans to get lip tattoos as the final touch in her transformation.

In a post documenting her journey, she wrote: “I have learned so much more than to just love what I see in the mirror these last couple of years. I’ve learned how rare and amazing it is to find a surgeon you can trust, communicate with, and laugh with. I’ve learned so much about modern medicine, and all the things you can accomplish.”

She continued, “I’m in awe of what my surgeon has been able to do. He is a true artist. Being able to love myself through every step of this reconstruction process has been the most amazing part. I’ve learned to love every scar, and every difference I see on myself that makes me, me. Looking back on photos like these really puts into perspective how much of a journey it’s been. I’ve been so grateful and so blessed.”
