While the Grinch’s mischievous antics alongside his loyal dog Max are unforgettable, fans will also remember the touching flashbacks to a young Grinch at school. That role was played by the talented Josh Ryan Evans, whose life was tragically cut short just two years after the movie’s release.
The Rise of a Talented Young Actor
Josh Ryan Evans, who was 3 feet 2 inches tall, was born with achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism. In addition to his condition, he faced significant heart problems that required multiple surgeries throughout his childhood.
During his recovery periods, Evans spent hours watching television, sparking a love for acting that led him to start pursuing roles at just 12 years old.
For his role as the young Grinch, Evans spent a grueling five and a half hours in the makeup chair each day. Despite the challenges, he embraced the experience and formed a strong bond with the film’s director, Ron Howard.
Howard recalled how Evans transformed what was initially meant to be a minor role into something much more significant. “Evans generated a lot of heart for the story,” Howard said, praising the actor’s ability to add depth to the character.
A Career of Memorable Roles
Beyond How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Evans was best known for playing Timmy Lenox, a living doll, in the soap opera Passions. His performance on the show earned him a Hollywood Reporter YoungStar Award for Best Young Actor in a Daytime TV Series.
Evans’ charm and talent made him a fan favorite, and he was poised for even greater success when tragedy struck.
A Tragic End
In 2002, at just 20 years old, Josh Ryan Evans passed away unexpectedly during a medical procedure related to his heart condition.
In a heartbreaking coincidence, the day of his death also marked the broadcast of an episode of Passions in which his character, Timmy, dies. The episode had been filmed weeks earlier, with plans for Timmy’s eventual return later in the series. However, following Evans’ passing, those plans were scrapped, and the episode was dedicated to his memory.
Remembering Josh Ryan Evans
Evans’ Passions co-star Juliet Mills, who played the witch Tabitha Lenox, fondly remembered him in a 2007 interview with Soaps Digest.
“Josh was a showbiz kid through and through. That’s what he loved more than anything — showbiz,” Mills said. “It was a legendary thing to do [to die the same day as his character did on screen]. He made a big bang when he went.”
Despite his short life, Josh Ryan Evans left an indelible mark on the entertainment world. His performances, particularly as the young Grinch, continue to bring joy to fans every Christmas season, ensuring his legacy lives on.
