The Start of the Potato-Only Diet
When it comes to weight loss, diets often seem to be filled with misery, with people cutting out sugars, restricting eating times, or consuming only certain foods. However, one diet that grabbed attention was the ‘potato-only diet,’ which claims to have changed lives. This diet was followed by Andrew Taylor, who decided to eat only potatoes for an entire year to lose weight.
Why the Potato Diet?
Taylor, who goes by the name “Spudfit” online, started his diet because he was struggling with food addiction. At the beginning of his journey, he weighed 151.7 kilograms. His goal was to lose weight and break free from his food addiction. The potato-only diet was an intense challenge, but Taylor committed fully and ate nothing but potatoes for an entire year.
The Impact on His Body
The results were drastic. After a year of eating only potatoes, Taylor lost more than 50 kilograms, bringing his weight down to 98.5 kilograms. Taylor described the change as “totally” improving his life for the better.
Nutritional Benefits of Potatoes
Despite the limited variety in his diet, Taylor claimed that the potatoes provided all the nutrients he needed. He reported getting over 600% of his daily iron requirements and over 400% of his vitamin C needs, along with plenty of fiber. However, he did acknowledge that potatoes lack enough calcium, so he used calcium-fortified organic soy milk for mashed potatoes to compensate for that.
Mental Health Benefits
In addition to physical changes, Taylor noted significant improvements in his mental health. Before starting the diet, he had struggled with clinical depression, which he attributed to his food addiction. The potato-only diet helped refocus his relationship with food, leading to improvements in both his anxiety and overall mental well-being.
Concerns About Nutrient Deficiencies
While Taylor’s diet was successful for him, experts have raised concerns about its long-term health effects. According to a medical expert interviewed by The Daily Mail, while Taylor would have had enough energy to lose weight, the diet lacked essential nutrients such as zinc, B12, and omega-3 fatty acids. These nutrients are critical for long-term health, and the absence of them could lead to deficiencies.
