The long-awaited second season of the global hit show has finally arrived.
The moment fans have been waiting for is here—Squid Game Season 2 officially premiered on Netflix today (December 26), and the internet is buzzing with excitement.
The first season of Squid Game took the world by storm when it was released back in 2021. Created by South Korean filmmaker Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show became one of Netflix’s most-watched series ever. To date, it has racked up over 330 million viewers and more than 2.8 billion hours of watch time.
Fans have endured a long, three-year wait for the follow-up season, which Netflix officially greenlit in June 2022. The wait is finally over, and social media is already exploding with anticipation and reactions.
One Twitter user expressed their nerves: “WHY AM I SO SCARED TO WATCH SQUID GAME 2.” Another wrote: “Squid Game s2 got me holding my breathhhhhh omg.”
Many fans have also shared plans to binge-watch the series right away. One person said: “Yaaay I can finally binge Squid Game 2.” On the Facebook page Netflix Bangers, someone else echoed: “I’m ready to binge this—it’s been too long.”
Lee Jung-jae Returns as Player 456
Season 2 sees the return of fan-favorite Lee Jung-jae in his iconic role as Player 456.
Though it’s only been a few hours since the new episodes dropped, fans are already showering the show with praise. One viewer tweeted: “Squid Game season 2 is 10x better than the first.” Another added: “Squid Game 2 is amazing so far.”
Reactions to the first episode have been overwhelmingly positive. A fan wrote: “First episode of Squid Game season 2 is amazing already WOW.” Another commented: “I thought Squid Game season 2 would be whack, but the first episode itself is so good.”
Why Hwang Dong-hyuk Decided on a Second Season
After the first season’s massive success, many fans called for a follow-up. However, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk initially had no plans for a second season.
Speaking to the BBC, Hwang revealed that financial reasons played a big role in his decision to continue the series. Despite the show’s global success, he admitted: “Even though the first series was such a huge global success, honestly, I didn’t make much.”
He added: “So doing the second series will help compensate me for the success of the first one too.”
But money wasn’t the only reason. Hwang also shared that he felt the story wasn’t fully wrapped up in Season 1, which inspired him to explore more in the second season.
What’s Next?
Fans of the franchise won’t have to wait long for more. A third season of Squid Game has already been confirmed and is expected to hit Netflix sometime next year.
With Season 2 now streaming and a third on the way, it seems the Squid Game phenomenon is far from over.
