As time went on, the Barnetts noticed some unsettling physical signs in Natalia. They observed that she had developed pubic hair, adult teeth, and even started her monthly menstrual cycle—traits that seemed out of place for a six-year-old. These signs prompted the couple to seek medical advice.
After medical tests, they were stunned to find out that the child they believed to be six was actually a 22-year-old woman with a rare form of dwarfism called spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia. This condition, according to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, affects bone growth, especially in the spine and limbs, resulting in short stature and other skeletal anomalies.

This extraordinary story has been transformed into a docuseries called The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, which provides a detailed account of the unsettling events that followed. In the series, the Barnetts explain the signs that led them to question Natalia’s age and the emotional toll it took on their family.
Michael recalled one moment when his wife, Kristine, was giving Natalia a bath. Suddenly, Kristine yelled for Michael to come quickly. When he arrived at the bathroom, Kristine was in shock, and she urgently told him, “Look down.” Michael was horrified to see that Natalia had developed full pubic hair.

The Barnetts’ concerns grew as the situation worsened, and they decided to take Natalia to a children’s psychiatric hospital. However, the staff soon transferred her to an adult ward after noticing the physical signs of adulthood, including the presence of pubic hair.
Attorney Beth Karas spoke to TMZ about the case, offering more insight into the events that led to the shocking discovery. Karas explained that the family went to court with an emergency petition and an affidavit from Natalia’s doctor. The doctor, who had been treating her for years, confirmed that there had been no bone growth in the past four years, indicating that Natalia was at least 22 years old.
As a result, Natalia’s age was legally changed from eight to 22, which meant she was now considered an adult. This legal change meant that she could vote, drink, and drive—an astonishing twist in this already bizarre case.
